Now THAT'S a fry-up! Pub that's battered its way to world record for largest portion of fish and chips

A chip off the old block: The Yorkshire pub has reclaimed the title for Britain with its huge fish dish

Britain has battered the competition after snatching the world record for serving the biggest portion of fish and chips from their American rivals.

Salt was rubbed into the wounds of English pride when the record was poached by The Black Rose Restaurant in Boston, Massachusetts, in March 2004.

The monster US version of the traditional chip supper tipped the scales at 78lbs with chips weighing almost 44lb and the fish 34lb.

Now THAT'S fry-up: Jacquella Watson, 12, gets stuck in to the mountain of deep-fried grub

But on Saturday The Wensleydale Heifer, in the Yorkshire Dales National Park, turned the tables and reclaim the deep-fried glory.

Drubbing the competition involved frying a 40lb fillet of prime halibut in the pub's famous Black Sheep beer batter, while preparing 60lbs of hand cut chips and a vat of mushy peas.

Sizzling away in a giant custom-made pan, the fillet was coated in more than four gallons of batter and accompanied by mountains of chips.

Guinness Book rules required the halibut to be fried as a single fish before being divided into servings.

Battering the competition: Hungry supporters demolish the pub's hard work

Local Black Sheep beer was used in the batter and served to wash down all the helpings.

After the official weigh-in for the Guinness Book adjudicators, the 100lb of fried food was wolfed down by villagers, who made a donation to a local charity.

Hopefully the Boston restaurant won't have a chip on their shoulder for losing the record.

The AA award-winning Wensleydale Heifer in West Witton is a 17th Century inn, named as one of the UK top 20 restaurants with rooms in 2011 by The Sunday Times.

This week has been a sizzling one for British fryers; on Thursday the Fish and Chip Shop at the Adventure Island fun park in Southend-on-Sea turned up the heat on their competitors by grabbing the Guinness World Record for cooking the biggest-ever serving of chips.

Five staff cooked up 448 kilos of chips, piled up inside a giant box, which had to be made to strict health and safety regulations, as to scoop the prize the spuds had to be edible.

The tireless workers took four hours and 20 minutes to cut the potatoes, deep fry the chips and box them up, battering the Guinness World Record of 368.5 kilos set in 2004.
