Ford unveils Mustang RTR

Hot on the heels of the Saleen S302, Ford has announced a dealer-fit upgrade pack for the 2011 Mustang GT. Called RTR, the appearance and performance upgrades have been influenced by Vaughn Gittin Jr.

That name probably won’t mean a lot to most people on this side of the Atlantic, but Gittin is currently leading the 2010 Formula DRIFT Professional Championship after three rounds. Naturally, he competes in a Mustang.

The 412 bhp (307 kW / 418 PS) 5.0 V8 of the Mustang GT gets an extra 9 bhp (7 kW / 9 PS) in RTR specification thanks to a K&N air filter and revised ECU settings.  A louder exhaust system is also included, but it remains just about street legal. Chassis upgrades comprise 1.5” lower springs, Ford Racing shock absorbers, a stiffer rear anti-roll bar and cross-drilled brake discs.

On the outside, the RTR gets a front splitter, side skirts and rear diffuser, together with an aluminium rear spoiler. The effect is completed by 19” alloy wheels fitted with Falken FK452 tyres, contrasting stripes and RTR badges.

The RTR package for the Mustang GT is available now, with a version for the Mustang V6 expected later this year. Suggested retail price in the US is $7,895, on top of the $29,645 that Ford charges for a Mustang GT.
